Track Meet- Queens College Invitational
March 29, 2012 – BRENTWOOD, NY – The Suffolk Community College men's and women's track and field team continued their season this Sunday, March 25, 2012, at the Queens College Invitational in Flushing, NY. Even in the grueling weather conditions of wind and rain, spirits were high as the team produced solid performances.
Suffolk took both the men's and women's long jump title this weekend. Dominique Mitchell's jump of 4.66 meters and Blake Evan's jump of 6.58 meters not only won the event, but also surpassed the national qualifying mark. Evans, a dual sport athlete who joined the team after a season of basketball, also qualified in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.04. Asja Mayo solidified her spot at the national meet in both throwing events this weekend, contributing a season best of 10.60 meters in the shot put and reaching the standard for discus with a 29.70 meter effort.
In the running events, Jessica Josema surpassed the standard in the 800 with a winning time of 2:29.99. The team's heptathlete, Mary Ellen Dankenbrink, exceeded the national standard in the 100 meter hurdles (17.11) and the 400 (1st place in 1:03.35). She has now hit the qualifying standard in 3 individual events that are included in the heptathlon. Both Mitchell and Dankenbrink are part of the women's 4x100 relay, along with Denise Davis and Kristine Trujillo, that improved upon their qualifying time from last meet with a 54.33.
Suffolk's next meet is the Roadrunner Invitational. This event is held on Saturday, April 7th, at Ramapo College.
