Two National Champions, Five All-Americans for Track and Field
Asja Mayo wins both women’s shot put and discus throw while Blake Evans takes men’s long jump title
May 7, 2012 – BRENTWOOD, NY – The Suffolk Community College track and field team brought home three individual titles, five All-Americans, and fourteen personal records from the NJCAA Division III National Championships hosted by Alfred State College on May 3-5, 2012.
Freshman Asja Mayo won both the shot put (11.51 meters) and discus throw (33.45 meters), earning her dual national championship titles. Mayo has been an impressive force in the throws this season, earning personal bests in both events and a school record (12.81 meters) in the shot put. Blake Evans, a freshman dual-sport athlete at Suffolk, won the national championship title in the long jump, with a mark of 6.83 meters.
In the women's long jump, Dominique Mitchell earned All-American status, placing second with a jump of 5.26 meters. Sophomore MaryEllen Dankenbrink earned her All-American title in the 400 meter hurdles (1:06.09), breaking her own school record, and scored in the 100 meter hurdles. Jessica Josema, another second-year athlete, earned All-American honors and broke the school record in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:23.58. Both sophomores earned a personal best at the national meet.
Another standout horizontal jumper, sophomore Anthony Reynolds from Central Islip, scored in both the long jump and triple jump. Multi-event athlete Frank Meza scored in both the decathlon and the open high jump, earning a school record and PR point score of 4545 in the 10-event challenge. Suffolk's pole vaulter Shelby White placed fourth with a mark of 4.10 meters. Distance runner Steve Galvao scored in the men's 10,000 meter run. In the sprints, freshman Ray Austin scored in the 200 meter dash and the women's 4x100 team placed fifth. Both the men's and women's 4x400 meter relay teams scored points for the team.
Coach Lauren Biscardi was honored with the Assistant Coach of the Year Award.
